Over the Top (Bilingual) [Import] is a mid-'80s action/family feature that might not immediately come to mind as a cinematic sport, but Sylvester Stallone (who co-wrote the script with Stirling Silliphant) certainly goes the distance to prove the contrary. Stallone plays the taciturn trucker Lincoln Hawk (though he's called "Hawks" by large portions of the cast), who faces two considerable challenges at once: to win the Las Vegas Arm Wrestling Championship and to impress the son (David Mendenhall) who's been turned against him by his grandfather (Robert Loggia, snarling up a storm).
Menahem Golan's direction and the soundtrack of bombastic '80s pop-rock (by Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, and others) are anything but subtle, and the host of opponents Stallone faces look like they were culled from professional wrestling (indeed, veteran grappler Terry Funk is in the cast). However, Sly stalwarts and '80s action aficionados may find this rousing entertainment.
The widescreen anamorphic DVD offers only the original theatrical trailer as an extra, but the film itself is a lightweight but entertaining showcase for Stallone's arm-wrestling prowess. Arm-wrestling might not be the most cinematic of sports, but Stallone's performance and the film's high-energy approach make it a surprisingly engaging watch. The father-son dynamic between Stallone's character and his estranged son adds an emotional depth to the proceedings, and the film's over-the-top style and '80s soundtrack contribute to its enduring appeal.
Overall, Over the Top (Bilingual) [Import] is a fun and energetic sports drama that may not be the most polished or sophisticated film, but it delivers on the action and entertainment value that fans of Stallone and '80s action movies will appreciate. While it may not be a classic, it's a solid entry in Stallone's filmography and a testament to his ability to elevate even the most unconventional of sports.
